In addition to producing our entire product range in the Fermentary, we also run events and fermentation workshops throughout the year. Find out more below.

Water Kefir Workshop

  • This workshop explores the 2 stage process of making water kefir and the many wonderful botanical extracts you can add to create a delicious sparkling drink that supports your immune system.

    Water kefir is a naturally sparkling drink made with probiotic cultures. The cultures are called grains, crystals or tibicos and apparently originate from Mexico from the leaves of the prickly pear plant. They are essentially a Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast - or SCOBY (a term you may have heard before if you are familiar with Kombucha). 

  • The workshop lasts 90 minutes

  • • An introduction to water kefir and practical application
    • Tastings of Newlyn Fermentary water kefir
    • Creation of a 1 litre bottle of water kefir to take home with you
    • 50g of water kefir grains to take home
    • Written guidance after the workshop with instructions and recipe ideas

Lacto-Fermentation Workshop

  • It is science but it's not rocket science. Lacto-fermentation is a process that has been around for ca. 9000 years. Its primary purpose was to preserve food over the winter months – before pasteurisation, before refrigeration, before thermometers and sets of scales.

    There are, however, some basic elements which we will explore in this hands-on 2 hour workshop which will help you create hassle-free ferments that you will love eating and sharing whilst also learning how to prevent food waste and support wellbeing. 

  • 2 hours

  • • Tasters of Newlyn Fermentary sauerkraut and kimchi
    • Fresh local ingredients to make a variety of ferments 
    • Creation of two large jars (both 850g-1kg) of lacto-fermented veg to take home with you 
    • Written guidance after the workshop with notes, measurements and recipe inspiration 
    • All equipment (aprons, jars) provided
